Our CombatVetsWeb Toolbar

William Cox [70.171.10.141]
wmcox@williamcox.org

As many of you know by now I've started my own Web hosting company and I now provide hosting services and domain names for combat vets.  I've designed very low-cost plans under $6 a month with more and better features than most anything you'll find on the net.  The URL for my hosting company is: [ http://combatvetsweb.com ] Check it out if you have time and interest.

But what this post is about is my company's toolbar, which I'm proud to offer for free.  It has Web search, site search, image search, dictionary, encyclopedia, an RSS feed from CombatVetsWEb, driving directions, digital clock with seconds displayed, and an alert button which keeps you advised if you have new email in your POP email account(s).  The toolbar also has a popup blocker with commands to "clear browser cashe", "clear browser history", and "delete browser cookies", all of which can be handy right on your toolbar.  The toolbar also includes a 24/7 one click private chat room that only permits users who have the CombatVetsWeb toolbar installed. Click the chat icon, you're there!

You can view the toolbar (the screenshot doesn't display ALL the toolbars features) at:

And you can download the toolbar at:

Within the next few days I'm adding a radio player to the toolbar and when I do any toolbars previously downloaded with be updated with the radio player option automatically. If anyone has suggestions for Internet radio stations I should include as selections in our radio player, let me know.  Of course you can navigate to any station with the player, but I need to test them for functionality before I add them to players drop-down menu.

There are no viruses, spyware, adware or popups with this toolbar.  It's an attractive, useful tool I designed to be of use to combat veterans with short fuses and low tolerance.  Any feature on the toolbar not needed can be unselected and it will "go away."  Then if you need it later, you can re-select it.

I hope some of you will enjoy our new toolbar, free and easy.

Any time frame that you'll have an answer within ?

Sweet Linda,
I am not sure how it works.  A bunch of Washington strap hangers are appointed to a committee.  They draw 50 to 60K a year to check out my mom's shoe size.  When they decide to give or not give me the award, they lose their sugar tit!  I have been told that if I am turned down, it will occur within 3-6 months.  If I am awarded a lesser award, I would know in 6-12 months!  It has been four and a half years.  Last April, I was given unofficial "good news." We will see.

Thanks for the kind words.

Ed

Remember a good while back, you posted a slideshow of your photos on the FFZ.  I'm curious as to how you did that.  Did you have to upload it to a website or were you able to post it from your own computer files?  I've really gotten into the photography thing as of late and I'm enjoying it a lot.  I'd like to post some of my slideshows on different boards that I'm on, but I'm not sure how to do it.  You are the only one that I can think of that has ever posted a slideshow.

Hi Fluff . . . Yes, I will definately make arrangements soon for a visit.  It's not that far, in fact I've used Google Earth to fly the route and see what it looks like.

Regarding the slide show, it was actually a movie [.wmv ] made with Microsoft Plus Digital Media Edition, Photo Story.  It's an excellent program well worth the price.  However, searching google with provide you with several good free slideshow makers, some of which will produce output publishable to the Web.  The best free one I ever used had "flyer" somewhere in the name, I believe.

It's good to see you and MTF back on this board, L.

More info...corrections

MTF [172.169.148.56]

Will, the correct spelling of the village, near the MACV compound, was Dong Zoung.  The fight started about 0200 hours.
Here are some names of members of the reactionary force:  Sp-4 Jim Brookshire, Sp-4 Johnny Stills, Sp-4 Merril, Sp-4 Kenneth Mantell, PFC James Rice and SFC Robert Bottoms.
The reactionary force of 87 men stood by until daylight with two 2 1/2 ton trucks and an APC.  The explosions, tracers etc. stopped around 0400 hours.  The force deployed from the Engineers compound at first light (0530 hours.) SFC Bottoms was coordinating with a Captain Strang.
Upon arrival, they discovered two SF sergeants and an SF Capt or Maj KIA.  The three U.S. were lying in a ditch and had been set on fire.  All three showed bullet wounds.  The officer was decapitated and his head was placed on top of the ditch.  There were 12 ARVN KIA's.  Approximately 100 ARVN's were POW or didi maued!

Former SP-4 Larry R. Carlile is the vet I am trying to help.

Thanks little Bro.  Can Jawje help!

Standing by, guns are hot

I'll have to look into getting the software.  I can't upload anything on this dialup network I'm on.  Talk about S-L-O-W!!!!  Just to put a photo on tinypic.com takes a good 15 minutes usually.  I've tried uploading video and slideshows to the online sites and it just takes way too long.  I was hoping it was software you used.  I'll have to look for it next time I'm out and about.

Whenever you are ready, head on down...if you like to fish, you might bring a pole with you.  That's about the only thing to do around here close by other than eat. There's plenty of things around that are driving distance though.  Me and Tommy, we pretty well just hole up here.  He calls it Fortress Fluffster.  Anyway, just shoot him or me an e-mail or call us (you still have the number???) and let us know when you are heading this way so we make sure we're home.

No, it's not that far to Gainesville, probably three hours.  It's two hours to Ocala.  I haven't been to Gainesville in a long time, cause when we go to Texas we cut off on Alt 27, so I can't remember exactly how long it takes to get there.

Thanks again for the info.

Have you asked here

or contacted Cecil
cecil13@direcway.com

his site (near the bottom) lists Leonard Doty as a member of the 577th also (I think B Co. though)

I have Leonard's email if the above two don't work for leads for the info you're looking for.

Other than that, the National Archives.

Jeez Mike you need to be careful who you let into your house !   Concentrate on taking care of you and forget trying to be Mr.Nice Guy for awhile.
Have you been diagnosed with angina ?  Given nitroglycerine ?  Just wondering.  You can never err in calling 911 for chest pain ... better safe than sorry ... and (as an added bonus) they might have detected something in your bloodwork that showed some foul play or not. No need being paranoid if you don't have to be...
What did your sister think about the situation ?

Up to a whole workload of a little over 2 in rehab ... you can see why carrying the clothes basket is a problem ... sheesh. But not as many naps these days & that's good.

as always,
linda

ps  I thought you weren't eating hamburger & stuff like that anymore ?

Military Duty & Lapse in Some Mental Ability

Study Links Military Duty in Iraq to Lapse in Some Mental Ability
By BENEDICT CAREY

A large study of Army troops found that soldiers recently returned from duty in Iraq were highly likely to show subtle lapses in memory and in ability to focus, a deficit that often persisted for more than two months after they arrived home, researchers are reporting today.

But the returning veterans also demonstrated significantly faster reaction times than soldiers who had not been deployed, suggesting that some mental abilities had improved.

The slight deficit, often unnoticed by the soldiers, could make it difficult for some of them to learn and remember information as quickly as they are accustomed to, the authors said. These lapses are more common but less disabling than emotional reactions to combat like depression or post-traumatic stress disorder, the researchers said, and in many cases probably reflect a natural adaptation to life in Iraq, with the reaction time strengthening at the expense of some other mental functions.

“We’re talking about a level of change that is not alarming and shouldn’t send people running to the doctor, but changes that some may notice when they are trying to perform in very demanding contexts” like a challenging civilian job, said the lead researcher, Jennifer J. Vasterling of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System and Tulane University.

The study, appearing in The Journal of the American Medical Association, is the first to track carefully such changes in mental functioning over time in soldiers who deployed to a war zone and those who did not.

Researchers tried to measure similar changes in troops after the Persian Gulf war of 1991. Many of those veterans, reporting chronic problems with concentration, suspected that they had been exposed to toxic gases that might have been a cause. But investigators had too little information about them from before they went to war to make meaningful comparisons.

Dr. Andy Morgan, a psychiatrist at Yale, said the new findings, when further tracked over time, could help doctors predict which soldiers will adapt quickly to civilian life and which will have chronic problems adjusting. “This kind of data should help us find early markers of trouble,” Dr. Morgan said, “and help us learn how to intervene if someone is headed for pathology.”

The research team led by Dr. Vasterling administered a battery of mental tests to 654 male and female soldiers who served in Iraq at various times from April 2003 to May 2005. The tests, more than 20 in all, were given before and after deployment, and included one in which participants had to pay close attention to a computer screen as letters flashed by, waiting to flag each F they saw. In another test, they were asked to memorize simple diagrams and try to recreate them 30 minutes later.

The soldiers did significantly worse in tasks that measured spatial memory, verbal memory and their ability to focus than did 307 soldiers who had not been deployed to Iraq.

But the returning soldiers scored about the same as their peers on most of the other tests. And they outperformed those who had not been deployed in a test of reaction time, measured in the fraction of a second it takes to spot a computer icon and react. This finding in itself suggests that the soldiers’ minds had adapted to the dangerous, snap-judgment conditions of war, experts said.

The deficits the soldiers showed “are perhaps better considered as essentially normal coping experiences,” Matthew Hotopf of King’s College London and Simon Wessely of the King’s Centre for Military Health Research, also of London, wrote in an editorial accompanying the article.

In effect, the brain, like the rest of the body, builds the muscles it most uses, sometimes at the expense of other abilities, say psychologists who study short-term memory and concentration. If reaction time is more critical to survival than verbal memory, the brain will devote its limited resources to that mental quickness.

Living for months at a time on adrenaline also affects brain function, soldiers and psychiatrists say. In a coming paper, Dr. Morgan and a team of other researchers found that elite soldiers under intense stress performed no better than pre-teenage children in tests of spatial memory. They recovered their abilities when the threat had subsided.

“We think this prefrontal brain area involved in organization and complex spatial memory is knocked out temporarily by high levels of adrenaline,” Dr. Morgan said.
